Defect In Software Testing
In this article, we will learn about defect/bug in software testing , why bugs occurs, basic terminology of a defect, and bug tracking tools.
Defect / Bug :
Defect means the software or application is not working as per the requirement. Defects are defined as the deviation of the actual and expected result of system or software application.
The definition of a defect, according to the ISTQB Glossary, is as follows: "A flaw in a component or system that can cause the component or system to fail to perform its required function, e.g. an incorrect statement or data definition. A defect, if encountered during execution, may cause a failure of the component or system."
Defects usually arise as a result of a programmer’s error, at any stage of software design, logic implementation, or code writing.
A defect is a system error that doesn’t allow the intended action to be completed. Finding defects is the tester’s most important task. It’s important to start testing as early as possible because defects can be found throughout the entire software development process. The earlier we identify them, the lower the costs of their fixing. All bugs should be recorded and tracked so that they can be properly managed and resolved.
Some Terminologies :
Bug had various names in different companies such as defect, error, issues, problem, fault, and mistake, etc.
- Mistake : Problem in the document is known as a mistake.
- Error : Problem in code is known as error.
- Defect : When the application is not working as per the requirement, it is called as defect.
- Bug : Bug is a informal name of defect.
- Issue : When the application is not meeting the business requirement, it is called as issue.
- Failure : After release, if an end user finds an issue then that particular issue is called as failure.
Why defect occurs ?
In software testing defects can occur for the following reasons:
- Miscommunication of requirements
- Lack of designing experience
- Lack of coding practices experience
- Last minute changes in the requirement
- Unrealistic time schedule for development
- Wrong coding
- Missing Coding
- Extra Coding
Defect Tracking Tools / Bug Tracking Tools :
In software testing, various types of defect tracking tools are available.
Some of the most commonly used defect tracking tools are as follows:
